The Tara Beekeepers Association will be presenting their "Beekeeping Short
Course" at the Reynolds Nature Preserve, Morrow, Georgia, on Saturday,
October 18, 2008 from 8:00 A.M. to 4:15 P.M. This is a course geared for
beginning beekeepers; however, experienced beekeepers seeking current
information are more than welcome. This course will enable most people to
easily maintain a hive.
The cost of the day long class is $50.00 or $55.00 day of the program at
the door, which includes 1st year membership Tara Beekeeper Club, Short
Course, refreshments, lunch, handouts and the book, "A First Lesson in
Beekeeping", latest edition. Children are free if accompanied by a paying
adult. Bee Club Members can attend for a cost of $15.00 which includes

Tony Avent is an international plant explorer, hosta hybridizer and freelance garden writer. He is owner of Plant Delights Nursery and Juniper Level Botanic Gardens in Raleigh, North Carolina. Since 1991, his nursery has operated a successful international mail-order business selling perennials through a coveted “wild and crazy” print catalog. He has been featured in Southern Living, House Beautiful, Horticulture, American Gardener and Fine Gardening magazines. On television, he has appeared on Martha Stewart Living, Rebecca’s Garden, Gardeners Diary. Tony says, “I consider every plant hardy until I have killed it myself. . .at least three times.”
Dan Benarcik is a horticulturist at Chanticleer, an innovative public botanical garden in Wayne, Pennsylvania. There he oversees the courtyard garden concentrating on tropical, sub-tropical and tender perennials for seasonal display. He is nationally known for his stunning container arrangements emphasizing plants with striking foliage, color, form, pattern, texture and size. He has authored articles for Fine Gardening, Horticulture, Martha Stewart Living and Rodale gardening books. He is an instructor at Longwood Gardens where he teaches a course on groundcovers.
Lucinda Hutson is a popular food, garden and lifestyle writer and lecturer. She also designs gardens, creates festive events and consults on recipes and menus. She is author of The Herb Garden Cookbook and Tequila! Cooking with the Spirit of Mexico. Her articles and photographs have been featured in Fine Gardening, Food Arts, The Herb Companion, Chocolatier and Kitchen Garden. She has appeared on nationally broadcasted radio and public television programs including Southern Living Presents and HGTV. With her lively personality and attention to presentation, she turns every meal into a celebration and every party into a fiesta!
Lee Anne White is an award-winning garden photographer specializing in garden design, landscape architecture, horticulture and landscape photography. She lives near Atlanta, but has a penchant for travel to photograph public and private gardens and the work of talented garden designers. Ms. White is a former chief editor for Fine Gardening magazine and author of a number of books including: Outdoor Living Idea Book, Front Yard and Backyard Idea Book, Outdoor Kitchens that Work, Designing with Plants and Exploring Garden Design.

Forsyth County, Georgia – The Forsyth County Master Gardeners invite you to attend the following programs to expand your knowledge of the topics below. The topics range from Birds and the Garden to container gardening in the fall and planting bulbs. These topics are sure to answer the many questions home gardeners and nature lovers have about any aspect of their gardens. All lectures will be held at the Cumming Library on Highway 9 (Dahlonega Hwy) across from Cumming Elementary School. The series is free to the public.
Additional programs are planned for late winter and the Mater Gardeners are looking to combine lectures with visits to gardens maintained by Master Gardeners for a first hand look at what can be done in various settings.

October 18 Birds and the Garden 2 - 3pm
Join renowned ornithologist and author Georgann Schmalz as she discusses the obvious and subtle changes that can enhance your landscape to become more valuable to wildlife, particularly birds. The program will include the basics of vegetative structure and diversity that can create healthful habitats along with information on bird feeders, baths and boxes.
Georgann Schmalz has a B.S. in Biology (Northwestern Illinois University) and M.S. Zoology (Clemson University); was the ornithologist at Fernbank Science Center for 28 years; is the current president of the Atlanta Audubon Society as well as president of Birding Adventures, Inc.
November 8 Container Gardening in Fall 11:00am - 12:30pm
Forsyth County Master Gardener Susan Roof will present methods of container gardening that can be used in the fall and winter to ensure both color and greenery.
Susan is a Lifetime Master Gardener and brings a wealth of experience in container gardening to the lecture.
November 15 Planting Bulbs 2 - 3pm
Are bulbs are mystery to you? Lilli Meier will show you not only how to grow bulbs, but the when and where of the process. Just imagine the bounty of color and blooms in your garden in the spring!
Lilli Meier is a Lifetime Master Gardener in Forsyth County with a wide range of experience in all aspects of gardening.
