News from the State Master Gardener Program office in Griffin
We are looking forward to seeing all of you at the GMGA Conference in Athens. Those Athens-Area Master Gardeners sure do know how to host a conference, having done quite a few over the years. We’re not sure, but we think they’ve done more conferences than any other group.
We are working with Amanda Tedrow to do a new Advanced Training on Organics the day before the Athens conference. It will be a great new training and we are still working out the details on the location in Athens for that. Look for the info on the List serve and on the MG website.
Other Advanced Training on the schedule is DDDI in Albany on August 18th. If you haven’t been to this training, it’s an excellent opportunity for learning even if you aren’t working on earning Advanced Training recognition. DDDI is Distance Diagnostics through Digital Imaging. This training really helps you become a better diagnostician and use the equipment to send samples over the Internet for diagnosis by specialists. Registration and information are available at the MG website or contact James Morgan at morganjl@uga.edu or 229-436-7216.
We are working with some other groups on upcoming training in Urban Trees, Communication, Leadership and Landscape Maintenance or Design for Projects. As soon as we have definite dates, we will get that information out to you. If your group is interested in hosting an Advanced Training, contact our office. Basic information and criteria can be found in the Agents section on the MG website.
If you have ideas for new Advanced Training curriculum, let us know. The training sessions are intended to provide Master Gardeners with more in-depth information than can be covered in the basic MG training sessions. The emphasis is on subjects that help Cooperative Extension and CAES address key issues.
School Master Gardener- we are working with groups around the state in refining a Master Gardener curriculum for teachers and others who work with school gardens. DeKalb, Carroll and Cobb counties have conducted summer training programs over the past few summers. Through this program, teachers attend a course of MG Classes with the electives focused on school gardens and outdoor classrooms. They attend MG classes all day for about 10 days. These counties see the value in efforts to get kids out into the garden. Computers are great teaching tools but so are school gardens. Counties interested in the School Master Gardener curriculum can contact our office for more information.
