There is no doubt that the Morgan County 4-H Program is recognized across the state as one of the finest. This great reputation would not be possible were it not for the efforts of outstanding volunteers. Lake Country Master Gardener Dick Whelan is one of the outstanding individuals dedicated to improving the lives of young people in Morgan County. Each year, the Morgan County 4-H recognizes an individual that gives of themselves heart and soul as the “Friend of 4-H”. This year Mr. Dick Whelan is the proud 2006-2007 recipient of an engraved plaque presented to him at the 2007 Morgan County 4-H Awards Program on April 9, 2007.
Mr. Whelan has worked tirelessly to initiate, develop and improve the Demonstration Gardens of the Morgan County Extension Office along with the help of many other Lake Country Master Gardeners. At least once a week you will find Dick on his hands and knees doing what he loves best, “digging in the dirt”. He has helped build and maintain these gardens and has donated many of the plants that are flourishing here.
Mr. Whelan has been instrumental in the planning and coordinating of the Annual Morgan County 4-H Plant Sale Fundraiser for the past two years. This fundraiser helps the local 4-H continue to offer programming that teaches children leadership, responsibility, and citizenship. His life and actions give meaning to what the 4-H program is all about. He is a mentor, leader, caretaker, and friend.
